Review: Kookamunga Dippers Milk Chocolate Covered Red Licorice

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

Taste: This resealable bag contained thick, stubby pieces of licorice fully coated in milk chocolate. The coating was so thorough that there was no external sign that the licorice was even red. I bit into my first piece and was surprised that I could barely taste any chocolate at all. Despite the presence of a generous chocolate coating, the red licorice taste dominated. As time went on, the licorice taste actually got even more intense, with even less chocolate to taste, maybe close to none. I did notice a nice hint of milk chocolate in the aftertaste. But I'm not sure the two tastes would go well together anyway. If you really like red licorice a lot, you might think these are pretty good, but it seemed a bit pointless to coat it in chocolate when we could barely taste it anyway.

Aroma: Strong fruity licorice smell.

Vauchon Golden Sponge Cakes Taste: These snack cakes looked from the picture on the box to be a lot like Twinkies, but with the addition of a wide stripe of chocolate on top, running the full length of the cake. It wasn't a full exterior chocolate coating like Chocodiles so they still closely resembled Twinkies. As a fan of Twinkies and a fan of milk chocolate, that sounded like a great combination to me! I bit in to find the expected soft Twinkies texture, with plenty of sweetness from both the cake and the creme filling, and it was nicely enhanced by the chocolate on top. Very good!

Aroma: Smells like Twinkies, but with some chocolate too.

Review: Good Natured Selects Baked Multigrain Crisps Tuscan Garden Medley

Taste: These narrowly rippled crisps (made from potato and several other grains) were oddly shaped with generally a light beige color, but darker beige around the edges, plus there were some dark bits embedded inside the crisps and tiny dark bits of seasoning on the surfaces. They were fairly dense and somewhat thin, with a nice crunch and quite a bit of flavor. There was a solid crunch and good crispness, and the most noticeable taste was the celery. Celery is not generally a dominant sort of flavor, but it was mixed in with many other veggies, seeds and spices for a nice taste to go along with the good texture.

Aroma: Smells like roasted vegetables with spices, definitely can smell the celery.

Crunchyjoy Taste: This box contained six individually wrapped candy bars, each fairly small. Each bar had a chocolate exterior with kind of a rough texture, and it appeared that the bar was a mix of crunchy things and milk chocolate. I initially thought it was maybe something like Rice Krispies, but the ingredients had various other things, including wheat and corn, that presumably constituted the crunchy elements of the bar. The taste and feel were quite good: lots of chocolate, but a light feel overall, less dense than a standard chocolate bar. It was hard to eat just one of the bars, but thankfully there were six of them, and three bars seemed to be a good serving size.

Taste: This bag contained fairly thin, wiggly, light green-colored sticks. The shade of green was even lighter than the sticks depicted on the bag, but the color still did look like wasabi. We crunched in to find a dense feel and sort of a mushy crunch. There was definitely some wasabi to taste, though not particularly hot wasabi, and besides that there was some actual green pea flavor, which was consistent with the main ingredient of the dough being peas. We expected these to be a hit, especially for our tasters who like actual wasabi peas, but it didn't turn out that way; most people weren't very high on the taste or the texture.

Taste: These Pop-Tarts had a light chocolate colored exterior with a darker chocolate frosting covering most of the top. I bit in to find a soft peanut butter filling and a taste that was a lot like Reese's, except sweeter. What I ate an untoasted one, there was a minor crunch from the frosting, but otherwise the texture was on the soft side. I liked the taste as I ate this, but the aftertaste was really quite sweet ? too sweet, in fact. So if you don't have a glass of cold milk handy when you're eating yours (I didn't) the sweetness might be a bit much.

Review: Nonni's THINaddictives Cranberry Almond Thins

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

Taste: This box contained six 100-calories packs of what were described by the manufacturer as cookies, but each pack's clear wrapper revealed three cake-like slices whose cross-sections had lots of exposed cranberries and almonds. Each piece was cut thin at about an eight of an inch, about three inches wide, with a dome top maxing out at about an inch and half high. Our snackers were curious to try these, and everyone who took a slice (or even half a slice) enjoyed the taste. The feel was crunchy, though not a very hard crunch. The pieces were somewhat brittle and not at all bendable, and brittleness showed in the presentation, as many of the slices had broken apart into multiple pieces. The taste was nicely sweet, with a good hint of cinnamon, with plenty of sweetness from the cranberry pieces as well, without being anywhere near too sweet. There was also a strong hit of almond, especially in the aftertaste. We shared the 100-calorie packs around, and most of our snackers ate just one slice, or even a partial slice, and liked it. So maybe not quite "addictive" but still satisfying.

Review: Jax Puff'n Corn

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

Taste: This bag contained small, soft, irregularly shaped cheese puffs, with bright orange areas where the cheese powder was and bright yellow where it wasn't. The texture and taste were good, similar to what we've come to expect from puffed version of Jax, but the small pieces were kind of awkward to hold and to eat. Compared to these, the puffed Jax are quite a bit bigger, and the crunchy ones come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but mostly bigger than these, and they're largely stick-shaped and thus easier to hold. We expected the shapes to be like Chester's Puffcorn because of the similar name, but these were way, way smaller. (Neither kind much resembled popcorn, as these erred on the small side and Chester's on the big side.) As with the other kinds of Jax, these left lots of cheese powder residue on the fingertips. A good taste, but really not that convenient to eat.

Taste: These cheese puffs looked mostly like regular cheese puffs, with a bright orange color, but there were also quite a few tiny green specks on each piece. We crunched in to find an excellent soft-but-crisp cheese puff texture, with a very nice mix of cheese and mildly hot spices. The spices got hotter in the aftertaste, and the heat lingered for a good long while. Our tasters were very big fans of these, as people sung the praises of the Cajun curls while returned to the bag for multiple handfuls. The level of orange cheese residue on the fingers was about average, so a napkin is recommended. Another success in the series of specially flavored cheese curls from Herr's!

Taste: These Goldfish looked generally like butter cookies with a bit of sugar on top (along with the fish's eye and a mouth), and most pieces had some colorful pieces (presumably the sprinkles from the cupcakes) just barely visible though the flat bottoms. The pieces were quite small, so it was easiest to eat 2 or 3 at a time. We crunched in to find that they had a good soft crunch and tasted like butter cookies, but also with a good strong hint of vanilla frosting. Hostess Caramel Dipped Shortbread Cookies Taste: These cookies were a lot like the Hostess Fudge Striped Shortbread Cookies, as they were round shortbread cookies with elaborate designs, fully coated on the bottom and thinly striped on the top with a fairly solid coating of caramel instead of fudge in this case. They were nicely crunchy and pretty good, with a lot of caramel taste. Taste: These cookies weren't quite like your typical alphabet cookies, in that they contained only four of the 26 letters in the alphabet. Put in alphabetical order, the letters included were A, E, I and K. Why did they choose those? In another order, they happen to spell IKEA, which is where we found them (not among the furniture, but in their excellent food area beyond the cash registers, which also features several kinds of mustard and many kinds of herring). As with any other letter-shaped snacks, we tried to play with them as much as we could, but we did also crunch in and eat them. They had a somewhat gritty texture and tasted kind of like graham crackers, with a mild sweetness. Most of our snackers liked them.

The shape of the bar was quite unusual as the sections were widely separated by a fairly thick chocolate, with chocolate shaped sort of like pipes rising up above the separator (but still far below the elevated sections themselves) connecting the sections together. From the top, there was no visible sign of pistachios, but the outlines of (lots and lots of) pistachios could be seen on the bottom of the bar, with most of them fully embedded in the chocolate but a few jutting out. I broke off some sections and could see lots of pistachios in the cross-sections. I but in to find varying texture of pistachios, with some fairly soft and others somewhat crunchy. Taste: These tortilla chips had an appearance similar to Doritos, with a similar color and surface texture, but they were quarter-circle shaped and each chip was quite a bit bigger than your typical Doritos. There did seem to be a higher concentration of bubbles in the dough than Doritos. We crunched in to find a nice crisp texture, very much like Doritos, and initially a zesty and cheesy flavor, but not much in the way of habanero heat. With a slight delay, the habanero heat arrived and gradually grew into a fairly serious burn. These weren't the hottest chips ever, but they were pretty hot. Passion Flakie Taste: These square pastries did indeed look flaky, as they had a croissant-like exterior, with a bit of purplish and white filling spilling out of two opposite ends of the square. The whole thing felt very light in my hand, so I wasn't expected all that much filing, but when I munched in, I found there was plenty of very flavorful fruit filling. It had a nice real fruit taste with plenty of creaminess and sweetness, without being overly sweet. The pastry around the filling was very light, and the mix of tastes and textures was top-notch. Taste: This flavor of Pringles came in a 1970s-style can (and a fairly short one) and contained crisps that didn't have any of the green seasoning that is typical of most sour cream and onion-flavored snacks. Instead, their surfaces looked just like the regular Pringles. (Unlike the Great Value brand crisps that we bought on the same trip to Wal-Mart as these, this one was filled with crisps all the way to the top.) They were sweet, peanutty, delicious and great! Normally, these can be found individually in penny candy bins, but this bag was a convenient way to buy about 20 pieces all at once. Taste: This bag contained wide-rippled potato chips partially coated in a fairly light-colored milk chocolate. Melting chocolate and stuck-togeteher chips is often a risk for chocolate-covered potato chips. We didn't go out of our way to test temperature-test these chips, but it still became an issue. It was clear that NutHeads Chocolate knew about the heat issues, as they included a cooling pack in the shipping box for these. By the time we got it, nearly all of the chips were stuck together. (The box had been delivered to a shaded area on a day with temperatures in the low 80's.) Even stuck together, we were able to pull chips off and eat them. Most chips seemed to be fully coated on one side, with the flip side large consisting of exposed potato chip, with some chocolate around the edge and in other spots. The taste was pretty good, but the chocolate had a very melty feel, and it ended up being fairly messy to eat. Still, the mix of sweet milk chocolate and salty potato was quite nice, and the partial coating helped to make the salty potato more accessible to the taste buds. Even with the half-coating, there was still plenty of chocolate, and it was good milk chocolate. But the melt/messiness factor did take away from the overall experience. The marketing copy on the bag emphasized the resealable bag and called this an "on-the-go snack" but it seems the intended uses might be bound by some temperature restrictions.

We crunched in to find that the popcorn was soft, crisp and light and the caramel quite delicious. Sugar ruboff onto the fingers was minimal. Our snackers were extremely positive about these, singing the praises of the taste and texture as they enjoyed these while drinking some beers. Some of the best!

Aroma: Very nice sweet mix of caramel and peanuts.

Review: Lay's Tapato Limn

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

Taste: These potato chips were fairly large and wiggly, and they had a nice bright glow from the generous amount of orange/red seasoning on their surfaces. There wasn't any skin on the edges of the chips. I crunched in to find a good crispness and soft crunch, with an explosion of flavor. I've been stocking Tapat?o sauce in my fridge for a couple of years, so I'm familiar with the taste, but the addition of lime made it a bit hard to recognize the Tapat?o taste ??and there was lots and lots of lime. I wouldn't say the lime entirely dominated, as the chips were still quite hot, but it altered the taste of the hot sauce quite significantly. If you don't like lime, stay away from this one, as the lime can't be ignored, but if you like both hot sauce and lime, these could be your chips!

Shop: Buy Lay's at Amazon.com

Aroma: Strong, sweet potato/lime/hot sauce smell. Nice.

Review: Sheila G's Brownie Brittle Toffee Crunch

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

Taste: After being quite thrilled by our first encounter with Brownie Brittle, the Chocolate Chip flavor, we were very excited to hear that there were more flavors, and we hoped they'd live up to the standard set by the first ones. We opened the zipper-resealable bag to find that this flavor was remarkably similar to the other one. The look was a bit different, as the darker-than-brownie-batter chocolate chips were replaced by lighter-colored bits of toffee ??though far fewer toffee bits than shown in the picture on the bag. The taste and texture were quite good, as the thin pieces had a light feel and brittle crunch; the taste was just like really good brownies. It would take a discerning palate to tell the difference between these and the chocolate chip kind, because the dominant flavor was still the brownies, with the butter toffee pieces a fairly minor player. Either way, our snackers were once again big fans, crunching on handful after handful. Perfect with cold milk!

Aroma: Nice strong brownie smell, with a good hint of toffee as well.

Sheila G's Brownie Brittle Toffee Crunch

"Rich brownie taste with a cookie crunch!" ... "No more fighting for that Corner Piece!" ... "All natural" ... "Like many brownie aficionados, Sheila is particularly fond of the crispy edges. In fact, on many an afternoon she would walk through the bakery gathering the brittle batter off the edges of the sheet pans as the brownies cooled in their racks. That started her wondering: How could she create a whole pan of crunchy edges? Well, lucky for us, she figured it out!"

Popchips really makes the big time

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

By Jeremy Selwyn
Chief Snacks Officer

07.12.2013
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Popchips has been quite flattered for a while, as there has been a string of knockoffs: Popped Chips from Herr's; Popped Crisps from Olde Cape Cod; Special K Cracker Crisps from Kellogg's; Snackin' Puffs from Barrel o' Fun; Nutradia Chips from SA Diabeticom of Belgium; and probably many more that we haven't eaten yet.

But Popchips can be more flattered than ever now, as today I discovered that snack industry leader (or perhaps follower in this case) Frito-Lay entered the arena in a big way by lending the Lay's brand to a product called Air Pops. (Even Frito-Lay has been in this game before, selling Popped Chips under their Smartfood brand. But using the company's namesake Lay's trademark and selling three flavors whose bags look a heck of a lot like the corresponding flavors of Lay's Potato Chips seems like a very big deal.)

We'll be reviewing the three flavors soon. But with the proliferation of Popchips-style chips continuing, it seems like time to ask some questions:

1) Are you a fan of Popchips? (We know lots of people are; so do those companies making the knockoffs.) If so, have you tried any of the other kinds, and what did you think?

2) We've been putting this style of chips mostly in our potato crisps category (except for some kinds that use other grains). We created "potato crisps" years ago for things like Pringles. Do these kinds of snacks belong there? If not, what should this category be called?

Review: Euro Classic Imports Authentic Belgian Waffle

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

Euro Classic Imports Authentic Belgian Waffle Taste: This waffle was kind of oval-shaped, but with the usual square sections, and it was about an inch thick. I put it onto a plate and figured I could cut off a piece with a fork, as is my usual practice with waffles. This proved to be difficult, because the waffle had a dense, bread-like feel, so it took some force to push the fork through the waffle. I did manage to do it, and after getting a small piece loose, I found a somewhat chewy texture with a sugary layer on top, a good taste. It didn't duplicate the crunchy outside/soft inside that you can get with a freshly ironed or (to a lesser degree) toasted waffle, as there was no crunch, and the inside wasn't light and fluffy, but very dense instead. It might be easier to eat if you bring a fork and a knife. The waffle was just OK, and far from great. It waffle didn't come anywhere close to being like the best waffle I've ever eaten, which was actually in Belgium, a hot-off-the-iron one from a waffle stand inside a subway station in Brussels.

Aroma: Very nice. Just mildly sweet.

Review: Runners

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

Taste: We bought this snack without any hesitation because our Chief Snacks Officer and most of our usual snack tasters are runners, so having a snack named after us seemed like a really cool thing. One glance at the front of the bag revealed that the actual snacks were shaped like cars, not runners, but still, we liked the name. The car at the bottom left of the bag looked a lot like a VW Beetle, and the former Chipmobile (retired in 2012) was a VW Beetle, so that was even more reason to like these. We opened the bag to find that the actual shapes of the cars were flatter than the ones pictured, so they looked like squished cars (or maybe cars that runners had stood on top of and squished?). The also had some very intense red seasoning. We crunched in to find that the Runners were extremely crunchy, made from the same type of material as Fritos, except far crunchier. They had a fairly strong helping of spicy chile and lime flavor, with maybe some mustard in there too. The aftertaste was particularly hot ??and tasty too. Our search for snacks shaped like actual runners will have to continue, but for now, these will do.

Shop: Buy snacks at Amazon.com

Aroma: Fairly mild chile and lime smell.

Review: Red Bowl Thai Coconut Rolls Natural Coconut

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

Taste: These hollow tubes had a light brown/dark beige color and were about three-quarters of an inch in diameter, so they were a bit thicker than your typical chocolate cookie wafers. They also had some dark sesame seeds embedded inside (mostly at one end of the tube, not evenly spaces as in the picture on the bag). We crunched in to find a light, crunchy, brittle texture that was very similar to those chocolate wafers, and even a similar taste, with the exception being the chocolate. The taste was sweet, but it didn't initially taste much like coconut. The coconut flavor arrived in earnest in the aftertaste, a nice sweet flavor. This was a tough one to convince some tasters to try, but everyone who did try these liked them.

Aroma: Very strong coconut smell.

Review: Barrel o' Fun Gardy's Signature Flavors Pickle Potato Chips

Home Subscribe Buy Snacks Chipworld Snacking Video News Gallery Yum About Us

Taste: These potato chips had somewhat wiggly surfaces, with some bits of skin along the edges, many tiny bubbles embedded inside the chips, dark spots on some of the chips, and most notably, lots and lots of dill stuck to the otherwise bright yellow surfaces. We crunched in to find a nice crisp crunch and a whole lot of dill pickle flavor. The pickle flavor was fairly intense and quite flavorful. The flavor of the potato was secondary to the pickle, but the two taste did mix nicely together. Our pickle-loving snackers enjoyed eating these, offer many thumbs-ups.

Aroma: Strong pickle smell, like you've just opened a new jar of pickles.

Italy police arrest more than 100 in Mafia crackdown

Rome (CNN) -- More than 100 people suspected of Mafia involvement were arrested Friday in Italy as police launched two separate operations near Rome and in the country's southern Calabria region.

Police made 51 arrests in Ostia, a coastal community on the outskirts of the capital, for alleged crimes connected to the Sicilian Mafia, known as Cosa Nostra, police said in a statement.

An additional 65 people were detained in a separate operation in Calabria, where those arrested are suspected of links to the powerful 'Ndrangheta Mafia.

The operation in Ostia is one of the largest ever carried out against organized crime in the Rome area, a police news release said.

More than 500 police officers, as well as maritime and dog units, were involved, police said.

The alleged crimes under investigation in Ostia range from extortion to murder, to international drug trafficking to illegally controlling the slot machine market and business activities related to the beach, police said.

Police say their operation has delivered a "mortal blow" to the leadership of the Mafia organization in the capital.

Entire Mafia clans have been hit by the arrests, they say. Among those detained are alleged Mafia boss Carmine Fasciani.

Members of another Mafia clan, Vincenzo Triassi and his wife, have been arrested on the Spanish island of Tenerife thanks to coordination with Interpol, another police statement said.

They are being held in a Spanish jail awaiting extradition proceedings, police said.

Politicians, businessman, lawyers, doctors and even members of the prison police were arrested in the second operation, which targeted Mafia leadership around Lamezia Terme, a city in Calabria, another police news release said.

Those arrested are accused of crimes including murder, criminal association and extortion, it said.

Every year, the release said, the criminal gang made millions of euros through a system of insurance fraud, with the funds used to finance the acquisition of arms and drugs.

"We are particularly satisfied with the investigation," Rodolfo Ruperti, police chief of the city of Catanzaro, whose force carried out the Lamezia Terme operation, told CNN by telephone.

He said the inquiry shone a spotlight on the "gray area" of relations among politicians, businessmen and Mafia groups suspected of carrying out dozens of murders in past years.
